Penalty Paid

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23

All have sinned and missed the mark. Some people appear to be good, others sin blatantly, but both need a Savior. We are not equally guilty, but we are all guilty. If you doubt right now that you are so terrible, take a look at the Ten Commandments. Have you ever lied, stolen, dishonored your parents, coveted, or put something or someone ahead of God? Do you always love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength? The Bible says that if we break one law of God, we are as guilty as if we had broken them all. The Lord Jesus perfectly obeyed the Ten Commandments and all the law the entire thirty-three years He lived on earth. With His death He paid the penalty for our breaking of the law. Now God credits Jesus’ righteousness to our account from the day we place our faith in Jesus. We must never place confidence for our salvation in our own goodness, but always rely totally on Jesus’ life, death, resurrection and ascension. We are rightfully accused and deserve punishment. Our sins are an offense to God, and a penalty has to be paid. But Jesus paid it! He took our punishment on Himself with His death on the cross. Now we are free by His marvelous grace, just as if we had not sinned. In the Old Testament the blood of animals covered sin, but Jesus’ blood covers sin for us today.
