“And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.” I John 4:21
How well do I prove I love God? How well do I love my brother and sister?
“Treat your sister kindly,” I sometimes remind my son. Or I say to my daughter, “Treat your brother with respect.” Then I remind them: “How you treat your siblings is an indication of how you’ll treat your future spouse.” I don’t know where I first heard that statement, but it sounds like believable truth—like something a mother should convey to her children.
Kindness in relationships is best learned at an early age. I want my children to show love to each other as well as to their spouses, if they should marry. Scripture teaches our love for God will manifest itself in how we love our brother.
How have I failed? Where do I need to repent? How am I doing at loving God… and loving my brother?
